Ancash – Huaraz Geographical Situation

The Region of Ancash is situated in North Eastern Peru, covering coastal and mountainous territories. It has a surface of 35,876.92 km², including the insular area (12.23 km²), at a minimum altitude of 4 m.a.s.l. (Chimbote) and maximum altitude of 3,910 m.a.s.l. (Shilla).

Geographical Relief

It covers a rather flat coastal strip, and an Andean area composed of high snow-capped mountains, such as the Huascarán (6,768 meters). The high Andean areas present an abrupt terrain, forming the two mountain ranges called White Cordillera and Black Cordillera which, in turn, form the famous Callejón de Huaylas (About 110 km. in length), along which runs the Santa River that cuts its way through the Andes and Pato´s Canyon, to throw itself into the Pacific Ocean.

  • To the South, with the Region of Lima
  • To the East, with the Region of Huánuco
  • To the West, with the Pacific Ocean.

Capital City

Es la ciudad de Huaraz, con una población de 150,000 habitantes, ubicada a una altitud de 3,080 m.s.n.m., y situada en 09º 31′ 47,21” de  latitud sur y en 77º 31′ 44,15” de longitud oeste.
