Mythical Cotahuasi Canyon    5 Days / 4 Nights

This is an excursion, combining culture, adventure and ecotourism, which allows you to get to know Arequipa’s historical center, its countryside’s vantage points and volcanoes, as well as the impressive Cotahuasi Canyon; the deepest in the world (3,535 meters), declared as National Tourist Reserve and located in the Province of La Union , 379 km. from the city of Arequipa; that is, a 9 hour trip by van or 12 hours by bus. Around this canyon, there are the Coropuna ( 6,425 m .a.s.l.) and Solimana ( 6,117 m .a.s.l.) snow-capped mountains. Likewise, it is the natural habitat of the condor, vicuñas and tarucas. Its geography propitiates the practice of diverse adventure sports, such as hikes, rafting, gliding, escalade, mountain biking, horseback riding and rappel. The circuit includes the visit of typical and picturesque villages sheltered in the deep Cotahuasi Canyon and Valley.

MYTHICAL COTAHUASI CANYON PROGRAM

DAY 01           Arrival in Arequipa / City Tour

• Reception and transfer to the hotel, coca leaf tea and acclimatization
• Lunch on your own account
• 2:00 p.m.: City tour, with the visit of the Santa Catalina Convent, the city’s historical center, Yanahuara’s Vantage Point, Sachaca’s Vantage Point, observation of Arequipa ‘s countryside and volcanoes and Sabandía’s Mill
• 6:00 p.m.: Return to the hotel
• Dinner on your own account
• Hotel night in Arequipa .

DAY 02           Arequipa / Majes / Chuquibamba / Cotahuasi

• 6:00 a.m.: Departure from the hotel, on a tourist transportation
• Short visit of Toro Muerto’s Glyphs
• 11:00 a.m.: Arrival in Chuquibamba
• Lunch
• Observation from Allhuay’s Vantage Point ( 3,950 m .a.s.l.)
• Short visit of the area’s archaeological compounds
• 5:30 p.m.: Arrival in the locality of Cotahuasi and transfer to a hotel
• Recreation at Luicho’s Thermal Baths
• Dinner
• Hotel night in Cotahuasi.

DAY 03           Cotahuasi / Sipia’s Cataracts / Collota’s Ruins / Taurisma / Tomepampa / Alca

• Breakfast at the hotel
• 7:00 a.m.: Guided excursion to the Cotahuasi Canyon
• Sipia’s Cataracts and hanging bridges
• Guided visit of the Archaeological Complex of Collota (Small Maukallaqta)
• Lunch
• Visit to the centenary and autochthonous villages of Taurisma, Tomepampa and Alca, in the depths of the canyon, on the banks of the Cotahuasi River .
• Observation of pre-Hispanic benched terraces, in current use and agricultural production
• Return to Cotahuasi
• Second visit to Luicho’s Thermal Baths (Optional and on your own account)
• Dinner
• Hotel night in Cotahuasi.

DAY 04           Cotahuasi / Chuquibamba / Majes / Arequipa

• Breakfast at the hotel
• 8:00 a.m.: Departure from Cotahuasi to Arequipa
• Lunch in Chuquibamba
• 7:30 p.m.: Arrival in Arequipa and transfer to the hotel, airport or bus station.

DAY 05           Departure Transfer

• Breakfast and transfer to the airport.
