Gran Vilaya Trekking (4 Days / 3 Nights)

This Chachapoya pre-Incan trail is propicious for adventure and ecotourism hikes and horseback riding, as it is one of the most beautiful and spectacular routes which allows you to visit places with extraordinary landscapes, archaeological compounds, sarcophaguses, mausolea, villages and typical hamlets, valleys, cloud forests, with abundant flora and fauna, all the way to the Fortress of Kuélap; a majestic architectural work built by the Chachapoyas, on top of a high mountain.

It is the mountainous jungle’s most imposing monumental complex, and it is surrounded by cliffs and precipices on three of its four sides. Inside its more than 20 meter high fortified walls, it shelters 505 living quarters, the majority of which are of circular layout.

GRAN VILAYA TREKKING PROGRAM

DAY 01           Hike to the Village of the Dead / Sarcophaguses of Karajia / Belén Valley

• 8:00 a.m.: Transfer to the village of Luya – Lamud
• Guided hike to the Pueblo de los Muertos (Village of the Dead) Archaeological Site
• Visit to the sarcophaguses and mausolea of the Chachapoya culture
• Lunch in the area
• Visit to the villages of Cohechan, Chocta and Cruzpata
• Guided hike to the sarcophaguses of Karajia
• Bus transfer to Belén Valley , where we will spend the night
  Dinner and overnight stay, in cabins or at the campsite, in Belén alley

DAY 02           Belén Valley Hike / La Pirquilla Achaeological Zone / Village of Congón

• Breakfast
• Guided hike on the pre-Incan trail, to the La Pirquilla Archaeological Complex
• Lunch in the area
• Hike through the Gran Vilaya Valley cloud forest, where we’ll have a chance to observe an interesting flora and fauna, and go by other architectural compounds lost in the jungle
• Visit to the village of Congón , where a delicious organic coffee is produced
• Dinner and overnight stay in cabins.

DAY 03           Congón / Lanche’s Archaeological Zone / Yumal / Choctamal

• Breakfast
• Horseback riding through the tropical forest, observing the lower rain forest’s flora and fauna
  Hike through the cloud forest and visit of the Archaeological Compound of Lanche
• Lunch in the area
• Horseback riding to the Yumal Mountain Pass
• Hike to the village of Choctamal
• Accommodation at a hostel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 04           Choctamal / Kuélap / Tingo / Chachapoyas

• Breakfast
• Bus transfer to the parking area
• Guided visit of the Fortress of Kuélap
• Hike to the village of El Tingo , where we’ll have lunch
• Guided visit of the Archaeological Complex of Macro
• Return to the city of Chachapoyas and transfer to the hotel or bus station.
