PIURA

Geographical Situation

The Region of Piura is situated on Peru’s North coast and mountains, near the border with Ecuador, and has a surface of 35,892.49 km².

Geographical Relief

Its topography is varied and with little geographical relief, on the coast. In that region, the coastline moves quite a bit away from the Cordillera of the Andes, leaving a great plain between both, of about 200 km. in width, which includes the Sechura Desert; Peru’s largest desert, and Piura’s plateau. Other morphological traits are the dunes, sand dunes, Bayóvar’s depression, and the fluvial terraces formed by the Chira and Piura rivers. The geographical relief of the Andean area, mainly occupied by the provinces of Ayabaca and Huancabamba, is rough and fundamentally determined by the presence of the Occidental Cordillera’s outer sub-ramification which reaches a maximum altitude of 3,700 m.a.s.l. Its territory is composed of five altitudinal levels: Coast, maritime yunga, quechua, suni and fluvial yunga.
